How to reduce the usage of electricity?
As we all know that the lights at home glows with the help
of electricity, the majority of lighting costs are electricity expenses.
This electricity expenses can be reduced by choosing the right type
of energy saving lamp. The first energy saving light introduced
was the Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL). Now we have
a much more energy saving light known as LED lamps.
What is LED?
LED stands for Light Emitting Diodes.
They are semiconductor chips that emit light when a current is applied.
Traditionally, this technology was used in traffic signals and various
status indicators. However, with LED technologies reaching a milestone
in its development LED is fast becoming the preferred light source
in place of traditional incandescent and fluorescent lighting.
Here we have the list of benefits by using the LED light source:
• Energy Efficiency
LED consumes 87% less power than halogens
and 50% less than CFL bulbs. LED produce only less heat which
helps in reducing the cooling cost during summer time.
• Long life
LED lamps have a lifespan of 50,000+ hours, compared to halogen
lamps which have a lifespan of 2,000 hours. If LED lamps are left
on for 24/7, it has a lifespan of 6 years. For shopping malls and office
buildings, LED lamps have an average lifespan of 10 years.
LED lamps will not shatter into a thousand pieces if dropped.
It also does not contain filament that can burn out, like the once used
in incandescent bulbs.
LED lamps replace standard lamps and are installed the same way.
• Financial Benefits
Based on today's electricity charges, a 60 watt incandescent bulb
which is left on for 12 hours/day will cost five times /yr when compared
to a PAR20 LED lamp which has 11 year lifespan. The incandescent
bulbs need to be replaced by an average of 4 times/yr, purchasing
new bulbs must be factored into the overall cost.
LED's also save on cost as it does not require regular
maintenance or replacement.
• Environmental Benefits
LED lights are free of toxic chemicals. Most conventional
fluorescent lighting bulbs contain a multitude of materials like mercury
that are dangerous for the environment.
LED lights contain no toxic materials and are 100% recyclable,
and will help you to reduce your carbon footprint by up to a third.
The long operational life time span mentioned above means also that
one LED light bulb can save material and production of 25
incandescent light bulbs.
